Embedded FPGA controller based Medically Assisted Wheel Chair for Elderly People

Project Abstract / Summary : ABSTRACT
Movement and self assistance becomes difficult for elderly people and people who are affected by paralysis and stroke. Hence, there is a need to develop a platform for those people who are physically challengeable and for elderly people. Elderly care emphasizes the social and personal requirements of senior citizens who need some assistance with daily activities and health care. Hence this project immensely empowers activities of daily living by improving their mobility considerable, automation of medicine announcing systemas per doctor’s prescription and monitoring and transmission of various health parameters (body temperature, heart rate & blood pressure etc.) to remote nurse station. This project consists of Embedded FPGA controller, Motorized Automatic/Manual controlled wheel chair, automatic medicine announcing system and Bluetooth enabled biomedical sensors with Android mobile phone.

The mobility control of the wheel chair is achieved using DC servo motor coupled with quadrature encoder and NI 9505 full H-bridge servo motor drive module.The mobility control algorithm is developed using LabVIEW in CompactRIO which is a programmable automation controller that combines embedded real-time/FPGA technology.

The medicine annunciation system consist of circular disk with 4 trays ( tray1 for Morning medicine, tray2 for Afternoon medicine, tray3 for Night medicine and tray4 for Emergency medicine), stepper motor and driver coupled with digital output module (NI 9472). As per the Doctor’s prescription, respective tray will open during morning, afternoon, night and emergency condition and also sound announciation will remains for taking medicine.

Bluetooth enabled biomedical sensors measure body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure and communicate with Android mobile phone. An Android application programme is used to receive these health care signals and transmits to remote nurse station periodically for further diagnosis.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Our main aim is to make things easier for elderly people.Presently powered wheelchair has good scope.In addition to that we have introduced the remote nurse station and medicine annunciation system.We hope these additional features would help the elderly people in better way.
