Efficient shutter lifting mechanism
Project Abstract / Summary :
Why did you choose to work on this project topic : As the energy conservation is the need of this hour, we wished to do our part with our academic project.The two major ways of energy conservation is by 1.Transmitting the input power efficiently to the mechanism by reducing the loss, 2.By reducing the amount of input given to the mechanism and there by conserving the energy and our project is based on the second method.By this project we can save lots of energy that we used to lift the shutters every morning as every organisation or shop start its day.The power used to lift the shutters, in general may seems like a minor power consumption but when we look it into in larger scale there lots and lots of power has been used up.By our project we can save and reduce the amount of power given to open this shutters. In future, this mechanism can also be used to lift heavy weights where lots and lots of power is used up. especially in places like harbor where huge container and such stuffs had been transported.In such places the amount of power given is very huge and if we use this mechanism in such places we can eventually end up in saving large amount of power.
Project Highlights : Few things we think that will help us to fetch this prize were,
1.Our project is simple and innovative.
2.Helps in conserving energy.
3.It has direct impact on the society.
4.Less production cost compared to its benefits.
5.At last, this contest may take this project to the next level i.e,production in large scale and make it available in market.

We devised a mechanism to open the roll down huricane shutter with the input being given for half of its total height to be lifted.
The basic working mechanism is as follows, first the input, say clockwise rotation is given to a shaft where a pinion is attached and the pinion is meshed with rack which converts the rotational motion into linear motion. A spring is attached at the top of the rack. so as the input is given, spring compresses eventually. when the input is cut off spring tends to expand and make the shaft to rotates in counter-clockwise direction. And this bidirectional rotation of the shaft is converted into unidirectional output by the help of free-wheel, which is based on Ratchet-Pawl mechanism.
And this unidirectional power output is used to lift shutter.
