generally efficiency of any machine is defines as the ratio of output delivered to the input power consumed.

volumetric efficiency of the compressor refers to the ratio of the delivered compressed-air volume to the swept volume of the cylinder.

it denotes how much free air actually entered the compressor and how much of it got compressed. the greater the clearance volume in the compressor cylinder, the lesser will be the volumetric efficiency.
