DoS Attack Possibility On Iran By 'anonymous'

The infamous hacker group named 'anonymous', which is known to launch cyber attacks to support causes such as freedom of expression and other anti-establsihment causes, issued another warning to Iran about a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. The statement they stated was "The people of Iran have the admiration of Anonymous, and the entire world. We can see that Iran still suffers at the hands of those in power. Your former government has seized control, and tries to silence you. People of Iran, your rights belong to you". It seems that they have started the attack (named 'operation Iran') by posting messages on several websites that were previously attacked by cyber army of Iran.

#-Link-Snipped-#Now let me explain you what a DoS attack is and what are its variants. During a DoS attack , the normal users of any computer resource (such as webpages , web services etc.) are denied to use the resource. The targets of DoS attacks are generally popular web servers. Generally, the attack is carried out by sending an enourmous number of service request to the target and thus consuming all the resources resulting in a system a slowdown. Another form of DoS attack causes the system to crash and thus completely denying the service. DoS attack can be directed at a router or any kind of server. The five basic types of attacks include capturing computer resources or disrupting cofiguration information or resettting TCP sessions or disrupting network components etc. There is a worse form of DoS called as PdoS(Permanant denial of service) attack. This attack is so lethal, that the entire system needs to be re-installed or replaced. PDoS involves exploiting a system's flaws in handling security issues and then replacing the firmware. In DDoS (Distributed DoS), many systems flood the bandwidth of the target system. A DRDoS (Distributed Reflected Denial of service attack) attack sends request to many computers that are supposed to respond to a request (using fake source IP), so that the target system is flooded with replies.

The best way to deal with DoS attack is to deploy powerful firewalls and IPS(Intrusion Prevention systems).Blackholing is another technique used to deal with such attacks in which all the traffic is directed to a non-exsistent server.
