Depends on what is the electrolyte soultion used inside the battery.Current cell-phones have Li-ion batteries which do heat up when they are charges excessively.Swollen batteries is an indication of shortened life of the battery.
There is a flammable organic polymer electrolyte used in the cell. The adapter of your cell-phone charger is a very vital component. IF the voltage regulator circuit inside it fails, the battery may rapidly discharge which will heat the polymer to such levels that it may explode out of the battery case. But simply while using the cell-phone there should be no such sudden discharge of the battery. Actually we need some more info on this. Help...someone??

I have seen my Motorola mobile batter going upto a big swollen tablet, but didn't have the patience to wait for it to explode. So I unwrapped it and it had such a smell, which cannot be tolerated! 😔
