Developing an engineer in me

The American meaning of 'Engineer' is one who works with engines. Essentially a hands on mechanical person.
The French word 'Ingeneur' means one who uses his ingenuity.
You have to be best of both.
One should get a good grounding of maths and physics. Robotics (mechatronics) and additive manufacture are the tools of the future. Not too distant future either.
Of course a passion for engineering helps hugely.
