Details of Twitter Video Revealed

A curious Twitter user has managed to unearth details about Twitter’s upcoming video service. The Twitter user in question is Daniel Raffel and he managed to land on the Twitter Video home page as well as its FAQ page. Daniel quickly unearthed the Java Script file and from the End User Licence Agreement was able to deduce that Twitter’s service could be a full-blown YouTube competitor. The Twitter Video homepage is currently displaying a message saying that only verified users can access the video publishing tool. Since the page has a header stating the phrase “Request Access” we predict that non-verified users will have to ask Twitter to enable video uploading service once it commences.

While the service’s homepage is devoid of any useful information the FAQ page has enough information to satiate our curiosity. Twitter will allow you to upload videos in mp4 and mov format that have been shot in 16:9 aspect ratio and encoded using "High Profile" h.264 video codec and the AAC audio codec. We know what you might be thinking, these video formats are commonly found on smartphones and this service might be an extension of Vine, Twitter’s acquired 6-second video sharing service but you are thinking in the wrong direction. The new service accepts videos of up to 10 minutes and allows you to set thumbnails for each video just like they do on YouTube. Once the video is uploaded you will be able to check video stats like view count, video quartile completion rates and see how promoted traffic fares against organic traffic.

YouTube producers will be miffed knowing that they cannot share a YouTube URL on the Twitter video player. They have to upload the video again on Twitter. Twitter says that this restriction is to maintain best user experience but we all know what is the real deal. The service lacks a few features that are available on YouTube. You cannot edit videos, schedule their public launch (upload a video at one time and make it public at another preset date and time). If you wish to include adverts in your videos you have to be an #-Link-Snipped-# partner. The Video Card system is supported on the desktop website and on its iOS and Android apps.

So what do you think about Twitter Video, will it fizzle out or offer some competition to Google’s mega video streaming website, YouTube? Let us know in the comment section and for more information refer to the links below.
