  • Now here we have an I.C engine of a vehicle which has to drive the following auxilliaries:

    1. water pump
    2. air conditioner compressor
    3. alternator
    4. cooling fan.

    Now all these machines have to be connected to the crankshaft by a single belt.

    now considering that we have all the data such as the speed-torque characteristic curves of the engine as well as the torque required to drive every auxilliary mentioned above, now what would be the procedure to design the belt connecting them all.

    Such a belt is called a serpentine belt. The problem is that if the belt breaks all accessories stop. So these belts have to be designed stronger and have various tension controls. They are more expensive.

    The crankshaft output can be connected to a intermediate pulley which drives all other accessories.The intermediate pulley shaft should be fitted to a shaft which has more pulleys to drive all other accessories respectively.

    There are proprietory free software from some belt manufacturers to help in design.
