Dell's Project Sputnik Set To Build The Ultimate Developer Laptop
We first told you about #-Link-Snipped-# in May and now we are back with an update. This six-month exploratory pilot program from Dell is set to create an Ubuntu Linux 12.04 LTS based XPS 13 laptop that will support building, testing, and producing of web and mobile apps.
Barton George, Director of Marketing for Dellâs Web vertical, the segment that focuses on the companies who use internet as their primary platform, says, "With regards to the system itself, our first priority is to provide all the drivers/patches for Hardware enablement so the system âjust works.â On top of that, instead of stuffing the system with every possible tool or app a developer could possibly want, we are keeping the actual âstuffâ on the install image pretty basic. Where it gets really interesting are the two extra tools that come with the system, the profile tool and the cloud tool."
Developers rarely agree with each other's tastes and likes, so they came up with a concept of "developer profiles", first of them being for Android, Ruby and JavaScript. The Profile tool will pull these developers profiles stored in a github repository, whereas the Cloud tool for DevOps will connect the laptop to a cloud back end.
