Data Acqusition and Control using Rasberry Pi Web Platform:Smart Plug

Project Abstract / Summary : Advancement of technology has made our life simpler where everything is available at our fingertips. Controlling home appliances using an Android phone gives users the ability to control their home appliances anywhere, anytime and saves lot of time spent searching for the remote control unit of home automation systems since the user’s phone is usually kept close at hand. In this work, we propose to develop a smart plug, an energy monitoring system that gives real time updates of the energy consumption at the device level. The proposed device is using a Raspberry pi microcontroller board, and a current sensor ACS712. The method of current sensing employed is noninvasive type. The User Interface of the device is to be developed using web technologies and the data will be uploaded onto a server using the Ethernet connection. The final result will be a smart plug that can monitor a remote device using raspberry pi-web platform which could yield even greater savings.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : The Concept of Internet of Things(IoT) fascinated us to do some work in this domain.Also we got to explore the Raspberry Pi platform and all the technology used is open source.The concept is more futuristic.

Project Highlights : Our system is one of a kind.First time such a system is implemented which calculates your electricity bill based on the device usage.The success of this system will change the lifestyle of individuals and will be a step towards digital India.
