DAEDALUS, NICT’s Cyber Attack Alert System

Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology unveiled DAEDALUS (Direct Alert Environment for Darknet And Livenet Unified Security) at a recent network computing and IT conference in Tokyo. This real time cyber attack alert system enables security experts to visualize and track threats (including the likes of denial-of-service attacks) through the highly advanced 3D user interface. Unlike the conventional monitoring methods, DAEDALUS employs extensive monitoring of unused IP addresses, called ‘darknet’. As soon as the system detects any irregularity among the monitored networks, it raises an alert saying “This IP address of yours is spreading a virus using this protocol at this time.â€

The blue globe at the centre represents the internet, while the monitored networks are suspended in orbits through circles. Blue packets on these circles denote the active IP address while the black ones represent the unused addresses. NICT plans to offer DAEDALUS to Japanese universities for free, and has granted ‘Clwit’ the rights to commercially launch this product under the name, SiteVisor. You must check this video out!
