Dhairya Dand, a student with MIT’s Media Lab blacked out and woke up in a hospital seven hours later. All this happened because he was partying hard and lost track of his alcohol intake. He soon realized that this event not only happens to him but it happens to drinkers worldwide and there needs to be some sort of warning mechanism. He came up with the idea of ‘ice cube’ sized structures which would be present in your drink and flash colors like green, yellow and red depending on how much alcohol has been consumed. Within a few months he came up with the following innovation. In a glass three cubes are placed and each cube consists of a colored LED, an accelerometer, IR receiver and a battery which are embedded within an edible waterproof jelly.

The accelerometer has been programmed to calculate the number of sips a person has taken with a timer to determine the approximate alcohol intake and flash the corresponding light. If a person is still going on after the red lights have flashed a text message will be sent to a designated friend asking him/her to intervene. Since this gadget has been programmed for the party people, the lights can also flash in tone of the ambient music.
