Corning Unveils Antimicrobial Cover Glass; Tough Gorilla Glass Now Gets Healthier
Corning Inc. has unveiled the worldâs first antimicrobial cover glass solution. The new glass solution contains an ionic silver component which serves as an antimicrobial agent to prevent the growth of algae, mold, mildew, fungi, and bacteria. In the #-Link-Snipped-# Corning states that existing antibacterial solutions for gadgets like antibacterial wipes, foams, sprays, and films are temporary solutions and they have not been approved for use by the manufacturer. It claims that the antimicrobial property of this new glass works continuously and will be able to last for the entire lifetime of the device. The new glass will have the same toughness as that of existing Gorilla Glass. The glass solution has obtained the approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a safe and non-toxic glass solution.
The antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass will not just be limited to gadgets like smartphones, tablets and laptops but is expected to find its way into health care, hospitality, and transportation industries where it can be installed on frequently touched interior architectural surfaces such as wall panels, doors and windows. The glass is now being tested by manufacturers for various applications and will be showcased at CES 2014 which is being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from 7th to 10th January.
