to convert a huge a.c. current in to house hold power supply we use transformers. but how to convert a.c. current to d.c. current for the electronic devices like a mobile phone? what is used instead of transformer in this case?

They are using step down transformer to step down voltage and after that Rectifier which concerts AC signal into DC.

Open your mobile charger and Google for labels given on parts 😀

230volts ac is stepped down to required voltage using tranformer then ac voltage is converted to dc

use a step down TX and a bridge rectifiers and capacitors to smoothen the Dc

use lamp 100w 220v Ac in series with diode in the phase line, and diode in reverse on the nutral line you get 12v dc,from 12v dc easly to get 5v thats enough to charge your mobile phone.however mobile charger cost=2 dollars maximum.😉

But that Lamp consume more power right?

You've a little misconception which is pretty common in case of transformer. The transformer is used to bring the voltage down (or even take it up in other applications) to like 12V AC which is required for appliances. The transformer doesn't convert AC to DC, but just decrease the magnitude of the AC signal. As godfather pointed out, every electronic device which takes input as AC contains a rectification circuitry. This covers the home appliances as well. Though they take AC as input, the AC is converted to DC before applying it to the appliance operating components. Very few devices used at home works on actual AC signal, for eg. geezer, water pump, old irons etc.

Mobile phone doesn't actually have to deal with AC as the charger does that job. So this circuitry is present in the charger. The mobile charger does have a transformer but unlike the ones we see normally, this transformer is very small and light.

A cheap adapter just have a step down transformer to bring 230V to 12V, a bridge rectifier and a capacitor filter. That's it.

The hum you hear when you do a series connection to an aged socket may be due to a loose contact, that is, if the question is in English.
