Computers To Interpret Moods & Emotions In Real Time

Computer Science PhD student Tom Christy and professor Lucy Kuncheva of <a href="https://www.bangor.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bangor University</a> are working on a prototype device that will enable computers to read and interpret human moods & emotions in real time. If the project is successful the technology can be used in many ways including in computer games where the player has to control his/her emotions during the play.  Tom is focused on 'pattern-recognition' and machine learning under guidance of professor Kuncheva who's an expert in the subject, specifically in classifier ensembles.

A classifier ensemble is a group of programs that independently analyze data and decide to which label or group the data belongs. The final decision is influenced by consensus is more precise & accurate than individual classifier decisions. The information from brain is collected by an electrode that sits on the forehead has a part of headset. Skin conductance response (which detects minute changes in perspiration) and a pulse signal, reflecting the wearer’s heart rate is monitored with the use of this electrode. The information is then fed to the classifier ensemble which finally determines the emotion person is going through. Tom wants to develop a real time mood-sensing device. “This area of emotional study is fast becoming an important part of research within Computer Science and is known as Affective Computing,” explained Prof. Lucy Kuncheva.

This device can prove useful in may fields other than gaming. Marketing departments can use it to determine consumer preference and brand effectiveness. It can also be used in Military trainings to monitor the stress and anxiety levels of the soldiers under various situations.
