In one of the most exciting developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei unveils an interactive and realistic robot named Jia Jia that can chat up with humans. If left on the street, one can't be blamed for mistaking her for a real woman. It comes creepily close to Ex Machina's subject, and while she may lack Ava's machine-conscience, she definitely has a few facial expressions to show off. For people bringing their cameras too close to get her close-up, she asks them not to come close and click pictures as it makes her face look too fat. Some feed.

Developed by one robot research research and development team at USTC, Jia Jia took three years to complete, and team director Chen Xiaoping believes that the robot can demonstrate micro-expressions, speak, also move its lips and body as appropriate. Unlike the earlier interactive robots, Jia Jia's eyeballs roll naturally, and her speech is in sync with her lip-movements, Chen added. The present limitation on Jia Jia is that she can not laugh or cry as these emotions are yet to be feeded into her system. Also, more facial expression recognition data shall be coded into here so that she's able to interact with humans on a more deeper level.

The team wishes to develop the robot such that it has deep learning abilities, and hopes their creation turns out to be one wise 'robot goddess'. Chen added that Jia Jia is not up for commercial mass production yet.

The robot shall be exhibited on a show at the 2016 China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair from 21-23 April.
