Large Hadron Collider (LHC), world’s largest particle collider used to test various theories of particle physics, will resume its working in March 2015. The machine is maintained by European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The restart of the 17 miles (27 km) collider isn’t as easy as flipping a switch on. LHC was switched off 16 months ago for the purpose of maintenance. Since it is the largest machine in the world, restarting it means restarting each and every component of the machine which can take as long as months to power up.

LHC was last switched off in February 2013 after a successful run at the energy of 7 trillion electron volts (TeV). Now, it is expected to resume its operation in March next year with twice as much energy at which it was shut down (13 TeV). In 2009, with the help of the collisions, LHC was successful in confirming the validation of Higgs boson- a 40 year old theory of particle physics which defines the conduct of every particle.

The purpose behind the resumption of LHC now is to go one step ahead. To find, if all the particles are of Higgs boson or is it just the lightest member of the family. If it is not the lightest, then the collider may produce even lighter particle of Higgs boson type or probably it will produce a new particle not classified by the standard theories. The work to switch on the collider has already began. The teams working on the collider have managed to cool down the entire 27 km of collider at the temperature of 1.9 degrees above absolute zero so that it can run without any interruptions for the next 3 years.

The Director General of CERN, Rolf Heuer said that with this much energy, the LHC will provide new prospects for physics and future discoveries and that he is excited to see what nature has got in store for us. Frédérick Bordry, Director for Accelerators and Technology for CERN said that the post the 2 years of work, the machine is almost like a new machine and that they are right on the agenda to offer collisions to the LHC experiments by May 2015.
