Career Guidance: Which job to pick?

Hello Everybody!!I am a fresher and i live in pondicherry. I have got 2 job offers and I am really confused about which one to pick.I am good at French and both the jobs are based on my french skills.

First Job offer is from an MNC in Bangalore and they offer to pay me 2.5 lacs p.a for the post of French language Specialist which is a decent pay for a fresher during this period of recession.I would be the only person for the post so i will get a lot of exposure and responsitbility. My job is also reasonably secure.

Second Job is from a new;y established freelancing company in Chennai which offers to pay around 3.6 lacs p.a. and he guarantees job security and the working hours are very flexible.

My ultimate plan is to do an MBA after working for 2 or 3 years.I am struggling to decide because I am worried about my future.I dont know what kind of growth and recognition I will get if i get into the freelancing company and work there. The only thing which is very tempting is the salary they offer but I cant risk my future for it.Please help me choose the right job.I dont have much time left to decide.I have to tell them by tomorrow. Those who could leave their numbers, please do it so that i could call up and get their view. Thanks in advance.

This one is tough to answer. You haven't mentioned anything about the nature of your second job.

As I understand, salary is not a criteria for you to select from the jobs as you are comfortable with 250k INR/year. Answering following questions might help you pick which job to pick -

    1. Which job offers you work in the area of your interest?
    2. Job Guarantee only exists in ideal world.
    3. Since you are aiming for MBA, which job will leave you with ample time to prepare for MBA entrance?
    4. If you had no wish to go for MBA, which job would present you with ample growth opportunities?

In the end, you cannot worry about recognition and growth. If you do the work you love, you will get all the recognition and growth you desire. Take my word for it.

I hope this answers your question. If you still have doubts, reply back. We all wish you luck.

PS: Do not ask for contact information. All questions must be posted on the forums.

Since there is some missing info, based only on what you provided, I would pick the second 3.6 lacs job. If you are going back to school for a mba in 2-3 years growth, future aspect isn't really a key factor. A secure, short term job that will provide working experience with a good salary to cover your mba costs is.

Thanks for your replies BigK and gohm. The nature of the second job is the same as the first one.In simple terms i will be acting as a French Interpreter for the clients of the two companies.

If its the MNC i am joining it will be on one year's contract which means I definitely have to work for a year under them whereas the second one does not have anything like that and i can quit anytime i want.

Why i am telling you this is because in the future say in a six months time I want to change my domain I cant do it if I am in the MNC.I feel i will be cornered.

And my biggest doubt is that if I work in the second company which is a newly established one, when i apply for MBA will my work experience in this small firm be considered because a lot of universitites ask for work experience.

Boy! You can always use your experience with a startup to your advantage. You can say you decided to join the startup because they offered you more challenges and responsibilities.

I don't see any reason why your experience won't be counted. If that was the case, no one would ever want to join a startup!

I guess you already got your answer. 😀

Yes I agree. The HR from the Banglore MNC spoke to me and she said like the company has 3 branches in India and when it comes to french I will be the only person for it.
She says that I will be holding a big responsibility and since it is my first job I would get a lot of exposure. She also said I have got through the interview which even many experienced candidates who applied could not clear.

And when I think of the growth in my career I feel if I get into the MNC and work as the French Specialist(completely non-technical) for a year or so and later on since its an IT company I could get myself into the technical side as well.

In case I get into the startup and say work for a year which is purely french oriented(0% Technical) and then come out I will have to look for job related to French alone and I dont know how the opportunities will be later on for me to get a better job.The startup is more like a freelancing company and though the person assures me of job security I dont know how far he would keep it because if something goes wrong.his clients may cancel the contract anytime. Please advice

There is no job guarantee, my friend. It sounds bitter but that is the truth. Your experience will always count and provided you excelled at your work you can always get another job.

I'd recommend that you stick to one job for next 2-3 years and prepare for MBA studies. When you switch jobs (and cities), settling in new job/city will take away at least 2-3 months from the precious time you have.

Plus, job hoppers are always questioned about their loyalty. 😀

I think you are worried too much about future and the problems that do not exist yet. Why not tackle the problem when it shows up? Opt for the job, clear your mind and focus on the MBA studies right away.
