Citizens of India would soon experience 'what fast internet is?' thanks to the decision by government aided #-Link-Snipped-#. Gigabit Passive Optical Technology (GPON) is a major technology for broadband connectivity in rural as well as North-eastern part of the country. While congratulating the move by C-DOT, Hon'ble communications Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal said that the move will bring a positive change in many sectors including defense and e-governance. #-Link-Snipped-# to state based firms and business houses would affect a fast application of this technology for improvement of Internet services. The communications sector in India is said to witness a good growth rate with privatizing the optical fiber technology.
The model which the autonomous institution C-DOT is trying to implement is functional in Rajasthan. The technology is tried and tested and has worked well with #-Link-Snipped-# Ajmer network. The technology here was earlier transferred to seven state and private players.
GPON is actually a very secure technology and is effective for point-multipoint connectivity. Unlike PON, GPON uses larger variable-length packets enabling it to achieve higher bandwidth and higher efficiency.
If the model works well on a nationwide scale, it would mean an easy access to sources of e-learning, e-banking and other internet related activities especially for rural and tribal areas. There is a huge potential for Internet to have its increased footprint in the Asian country and will have many good effects. However will privatization be a good option? The answer has varied dimensions and cannot be said anything just now. Do share with us your views in this regards via comments.
