BSNL 4G Launch Soon - But Don't Count On It Yet

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), one of India's leading telecom service providers is gearing up to launch its 4G services. According to reports published in most of the leading media sources, BSNL is eyeing about 14 telecom circles all over India for the launch. Note that there's no official timeline or schedule announced by BSNL but the plan is to roll out the service as soon as possible. BSNL is likely to install the 4G stations at its existing GSM locations to speed up the process.

An official from BSNL informed that since BSNL already has access to the 20 MHz liberalised spectrum in the 2500 MHz band, the rollout won't face any license related hurdles. India already has plenty of 4G capable devices from leading phone makers that can access the signal over the 2500 MHz band. BSNL has figured out that rolling out their services is very much feasible with its existing ecosystem.

BSNL's already done a limited, beta launch of their service for trial in Chandigarh. The speed during the tests, however, wasn't very promising with the test results maxing at 35 Mbps. BSNL's entry will heat up the 4G domain in India which already has heavyweights like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular.
