On December 15th Google Chrome developers released a new extension “Chrome For Cause”. This extension was just meant for charity, starting from 15th December to 19th of December the extension just counted the tabs opened by the user and asks for charity to one of these five causes:

-Vaccinations
-Books
-Clean Water
-Square-feet Of Shelter
-Trees

The total tab count was used for donating up to 1 million for above causes. Following was the tab count :
-10 tabs= 1 Tree planted
-10 tabs=1 Book published and donated
-25 tabs=1 Vaccination treatment provided
-100 tabs= 1 Square-foot of shelter built
-200 tabs= 1 Person’s clean water for year

#-Link-Snipped-# The user just had to surf with Google chrome and at the end of the day the extension would ask for your cause for which you’ll like to donate your tabs, user selects a tab and done. A same charity can be done everyday or a new cause could be selected every-time a user  submits his/her tabs. On 22nd Google declared that Chrome community raised million dollars for charity by 60,599,541 tabs opened by Chrome users. Google also released notes on how the charity will be used.

At end of the day I can never deny, this can be one of trick used by Google to know how many people really use chrome as their default browser. I can say this just because the user has to sign in to his/her Google account for submitting tabs. That means they can be sure that a person is using their own browser. Isn’t that a smart move? Since people might be thinking their browsing habit is used for charity. Anyways, browsing for charity that too without paying a penny is much better excuse than the above one to surf. Chrome wants people to keep their extensions installed even after the date is gone for charity but who knows they may once again come up with same plan so that we can browse again some good cause.
