Looks like Boeing got bored with making just airplanes, helicopters and stuff! Now, they are coming to smart phone market with “The Boeing Phone”. And they have chosen the world’s most used mobile operating system, Android. This super secure smart phone is supposedly targeted for defense, government and high end users and will be available by the end of the year.

Roger Krone, president at Boeing Network and Space Systems, told National Defense Magazine, “This is probably the first time the aerospace and defense industry giant will offer a communication device designed to use cellular networks.” According to him they chose Android Operating System as they want the phone to feel like popular consumer devices while providing military grade security and encrypted voice and data traffic. The phone will give the users what they are used to seeing (most popular mobile OS) and give them the functionality from security purposes. He also added that this is not a one time drill. They intend to go far. In his words, "In fact the next one I have is going to be thinner, smaller and have more capability."

Brian Palma, vice president at Boeing Secure Infrastructure Group, told the reporters that the phone is in the last phase of it's development cycle and will be available in the market by the end of the year. According to him, similar secure phones are sold in the market at a price of $15,000 to $20,000. They aim to lower the price, but it won’t be a mass market price. So, the phone is not going to compete directly with iPhone, Blackberry etc. He said, “We believe that there is significant interest in the defense side as well as the intelligence side and in the commercial world as well.” As expected, Boeing hasn’t released any specs about the phone. They even refused to share the partner’s names. The name of “The Boeing Phone” hasn’t been decided till now, but Krone believes it’s going to be a great product. Well, we hope so too!
