Battery Management System By CHEEVC Makes Batteries Work In Shifts

CHEEVC, a Scotland based technology start-up has developed 'Shift-Based Battery Management System', promising to extend the overall lifecycle by allotting some 'rest' to the individual battery cells. The battery management system is a combination of hardware and software system developed by CHEEVC and is capable of working with any battery type. The team is focused on implementing the solution for the Li-Ion batteries used in e-mobikes and scooters and have trade marketed the technology as "ALLPlus+â„¢".

The ALLPlus+™ technology has been developed to fix a common problem with the rechargeable batteries. The overall rate of charging and discharging of a battery is determined by the rate of transformation of the 'active' chemical in the battery. Circulating high currents through the battery may cause incomplete transformation of the active chemicals which affects the effective charge capacity. This may even lead to unwanted chemical reactions within the battery and consumption of the active chemical, causing premature ageing of the battery. The ALLPlus+™ addresses this problem by introducing rest periods during the charging and discharging of batteries, allowing more time for chemical transformations.

CHEEVC's engineers thought of having access to individual cells in the battery so that the battery can be rested without losing any power. A specialised software controls two ore more Field Effective Transistors (EFTs) to bypass individual cells in a sequence. This approach makes each cell age at the same rate and as a result, the overall life of the battery can be improved by ~30%. This even means the range of the EVs can be improved by about 14%.
