    hey,
we can say, tap is a subset of gate.
tap is the point of entry/exit of only fluids.....gate is the point of entry / exit of any matter.....basically both of them controls the movement

A tap and a valve are basically one and the same.
Valves which are rampantly used in our day to day lives, like the faucets in our bathrooms and basins are called taps. The rest as the ones used to control water supply on the main water pipelines are called valves.
