Basic difference between Switch and hub
whats the basic difference between hub and switch?

samdasoxideHUBS
Hubs repeat everything they
receive and can be used to
extend the network. However,
this can result in a lot of
unnecessary traffic being sent to
all devices on the network. Hubs
pass on traffic to the network
regardless of the intended
destination; the PCs to which the
packets are sent use the address
information in each packet to
work out which packets are
meant for them. In a small
network repeating is not a
problem but for a larger, more
heavily used network, another
piece of networking equipment
(such as a switch) may be
required to help reduce the
amount of unnecessary traffic
being generated.
Switches
Switches control the flow of
network traffic based on the
address information in each
packet. A switch learns which
devices are connected to its
ports (by monitoring the packets
it receives), and then forwards
on packets to the appropriate
port only. This allows
simultaneous communication
across the switch, improving
bandwidth.
This switching operation reduces
the amount of unnecessary
traffic that would have occurred
if the same information had been
sent from every port (as with a
hub).
Switches and hubs are often
used in the same network; the
hubs extend the network by
providing more ports, and the
switches divide the network into
smaller, less congested sections

hdnivaraTo put it simply, hub lacks the intelligence of a switch. A switch actually learns the MAC addresses of the connected devices and puts them in a table.
Eg., if a frame is received on port A with a source MAC as X, the switch makes a note of it, so that, it can forward the incoming frames with destination MAC as X to port A.
Whereas in case of a hub, this is not possible and the hub ends up broadcasting the frame to all other ports. -

Banashree Patra1. Switch is an intelligence device. Here packets are sent to the port the are meant for.
Whereas hub lack that intelligence. It forward the packets to all the ports that are connected to the hub.
2. Due to this intelligence cost of switch is higher than hub. -
Manish GoyalSwitch is nothing but an intelligent device , the purpose is same of both, just switch forwards packets to device to whom it is intended where as hub don't
Technical Reason: Switch stores Mac address of each system where as hub not -
Chinu1The term ‘hub’ is used to pass on to any piece of network equipment that connects PCs together, but it actually refers to a multi-port repeater.
But Switches manage the flow of network traffic based on the address information in each packet. -
Jeffrey ArulrajHubs are repeaters
Switches turn the connection between the computer and server on or off
