BAE's NAVSOP System Is A Back-Up To GPS And GNSS
BAE Systems is working on a low cost navigation technology as a back-up to GPS and GNSS in order to prevent users from losing GPS connectivity due to tall buildings or jamming technologies. The Navigation via Signals of Opportunity (NAVSOP) system acts independently to the mobileâs internet connection and draws the map of an area using ground-based signals from radio, mobile phone networks, wireless internet, TV and low-orbiting satellites. The system makes its map by analyzing repetitive pattern of the signals and GPS calibrations of a new location, and once this is done no further GPS connectivity is required to navigate through the system.

Presently, BAE is working on two version of this technology specifically dedicated for indoor and outdoor use. The only concern expressed regarding this system might be its productivity in sparsely populated areas lacking multiple signals to build the maps.
