Automation of Sand Molding To Create Single Piece Mold Cavities
Project Abstract / Summary : The objective of the project is to automate the process of sand molding to create single piece mold cavities. The technology developed will significantly improve the flexibility and productivity of the present sand molding technology by attempting to achieve the following broad objectives -
1. An attempt has been made to develop a machine, which will automate the process of sand molding. The proof of concept will suggest a method to create arbitrary uniaxial symmetrical single piece mold cavities without the use of a pattern.
2. The concept will provide a method to create precision mold cavities, which presently require complex two or three piece patterns. By using the concept, complexities and casting defects characteristic to the traditional method can be minimized.
3. The concept can significantly improve the flexibility of the sand molding process by providing a programmable interface where new casting designs can be encoded.
Why did you choose to work on this project topic : The present sand molding technology has not witnessed any major automation innovation and remains a labor intensive task. With the growth of CNC technology, we believe that an approach to automate the process of sand molding can substantially improve the productivity of sand casting. This improvement in productivity, flexibility and agility of the sand molding process can have a significant effect on the entire manufacturing industry as presently casting is one of the widest manufacturing process used. We believe that our effort to create this new concept will also promote research in this field and open up new avenues in precision casting.
