Automatic speed control in automobiles in accident prone areas

Project Abstract / Summary : AUTOMATIC SPEED CONTROL IN AUTOMOBILES

ABSTRACT

Speed control is in the need of the hour due to the increased rate of accidents reported in our day-to-day life. During 2013, in India a total of 5, 97,686 road accidents were reported which is a result of lack of speed control and violating the road rules. Road accidents can be prevented by adopting measures such as Traffic management, improving quality of road infrastructure and safer vehicles. The existing techniques still does not reduce the number of accidents. Hence there is a need to implement Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) in vehicles where speed can be automatically controlled by various limiting techniques which are based on zones, highway, traffic density etc. In this research work, we proposes automatic speed control system based on RF signals for accident prone areas, hospital and school roads where the speed control within limit is required. The methodology explains that, a various RF transmitter are placed on roads where the speed control within limit is required and vehicle will have a RF receiver attached which will recognize the signal from the transmitter placed on the road and accordingly maintain the vehicles speed in that particular limit. In this developed system, the RF sensors are used to activate/deactivate the system of speed control within the limited zone. In actual practice, the system works when the vehicle enters in speed limiting areas like hospitals, schools and accident prone areas where the speed limit is required. The RF sensor detects the signals to activate the system and send the signals to programmable speed governor which controls the fuel supply to the pump/motor which result in controlling the speed of engine at given limit. When the system is activated, vehicle is controlled at given limited speed or below that limiting speed and cannot exceed beyond that limit till the zone is over. A voice note is provided which will indicate the driver that the vehicle is going to enter the zone and to reduce the speed to required speed limit.

This system is also provided with a partial braking system which will act upon the vehicle running at 80Km\hr or above and speed is controlled safely. This reduces the road accidents and gets driving comfort for the driver and safety for other civilians, after implementation of automatic speed control system.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : There is an increasing amount of road accidents in recent years and we wanted to do a project which could benefit for the social cause and save life's of passengers and civilians by use of an intelligent on board safety system in automobiles which will prevent accidents or reduce the severity of accident by a large proportion .
This made us do the project which could control the speed of automobiles automatically in accident prone areas and we have been successful in developing the working model of the project.
