Audi Chooses Tegra 3 To Power Its Vehicle's Infotainment

Announced at CES 2012, Nvidia and Audi have struck a partnership again with Audi choosing Nvidia Tegra 3 systems to power their in-vehicle infotainment. Starting in 2013, new digital instruments will replace traditional dashboard gauges across the whole line of Audi vehicles. Tegra 3 processor is a complete system-on-a-chip that functions on a quad-core ARM CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce GPU and dedicated audio, video and image processors.

The infotainment systems and the digital instrument clusters will employ Visual Computing Models (VCM) powered by the Tegra 3 system. VCMs are computer subsystems designed especially for automotive applications equipped with Tegra SoCs, memory and I/O controllers.

Audi has been a well-known brand in the market with its superior automotive design and integrated state-of-the-art technology. Last year, Audi introduced the first live Google Earth experience in a car. This year, Audi vehicles featuring the Tegra 2 mobile processor are shipping and they hope to continue their prowess with the introduction of Tegra 3 powered systems next year. "Our deep relationship with NVIDIA demonstrates how we have consistently stayed ahead of the competition",  said Ricky Hudi, chief executive engineer, electrics/electronics, at Audi. With the ability of Tegra 3 systems to power rich visuals, Audi aims to implement this technology for their next-gen infotainment systems.

Tegra 3 powered VCMs give Audi the opportunity to enable the most cutting-edge visual computing technology for its vehicles. The compact integration of VCMs with the vehicle, along with the simplistic UI and advanced graphics will provide for a safer, more intuitive driving with critical information that can be easily grasped with a quick glance. With their joint venture, Audi and Nvidia seem to have narrowed the gap between automotive electronics and consumer electronics.
