ATMs Likely To Get Upgraded To Windows 10 Soon
Microsoft's Windows 10 will be available to everyone by the end of July and we're likely to see ATMs to upgrade to Windows 10 very soon. The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) has released a #-Link-Snipped-# (PDF) that recommends that ATM machines should upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as possible. Note that majority of ATM machines were recently upgraded to Windows 7 from the age old yet reliable Windows XP.
The ATMIA has recommended that the Windows 8 or 8.1 versions should be skipped in favor of Windows 10. Note that Windows 7 support will officially end by year 2020 and all the ATM machines will need to be migrated to a newer version of Windows. CEO of ATMIA, Mike Lee said that the hardware purchased now will still be used in 2020; hence it's important to upgrade to the next big operating system version.
The large-scale upgrades of operating system is not new to the ATM industry. The industry has seen migration from OS/2 to Windows Xp and then from XP to 7 in the past decade. Lee also said that the next generation ATM architecture will look into possibilities of Linux powered or Android powered ATMs along with the mainstream solution which is powered by Microsoft Windows 10.
Migration to Windows 10 will ensure that the security related issues are taken care of. When the Windows 7 support ends in 2020; the machines which have not been upgraded will be at high security risk.
