ARGUS-IS, The 1.8 GigaPixel Camera In The Sky

American drones have been known to be the smartest of all and recently, DARPA revealed information on their ARGUS-IS (Autonomous Real-Time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance Imaging System). This system takes 1.8 GigaPixel images with the help of hundreds of smartphone image sensors.

The ARGUS can keep a real time view an an area of 4.5 miles (7.2 km) across down to a resolution of about six inches from an altitude of 20,000 ft. The ARGUS would be mounted on an unmanned drone. Due to a high resolution, data flow would be enormous and hence a 32-bit processor would be carrying out the data compression.

The ARGUS system has a quite high level of functionality, but still it is being optimized to get better functions. The capabilities of the system cannot be judged yet since not all its features have been revealed.
