Architectural Differences Between Mobile OS & Desktop OS?

Can someone elaborate the basic differences between mobile operating systems and desktop operating systems? Are mobile OS just the trimmed down versions of the desktop OS designed to run on limited hardware?

    Yeah, first point would be obviously performance in the basis of Power Saving, Response Time and Data Storage. But more than that, the capability to make other things like connect to Network (2G/3G), make calls, etc., and also more communication specific programming like Messaging Support and Logs are available. 😀
