AMD Launches Second Generation A-Series APUs, Codenamed "Trinity"

The second generation A-series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) processors from AMD were #-Link-Snipped-# today officially. Codenamed 'Trinity', these processors would be used in Ultrabooks, HTPCs, notebooks and desktops. The APUs combine some powerful CPUs and GPUs in a single chip giving the best-in-class entertainment, gaming and PC mobility. AMD claims of providing twice the performance than previous generations while keeping the power usage low. The new 'Piledriver' CPU core provides up to 29 percent increase in processing speeds and the Radeon 7000 series GPU boosts the graphics performance up to 56 percent over LIano.

The details of the five APUs unveiled today are as follows:

These 32nm processors for notebooks will be less power hungry as the dual-core chips would use as low as 17 Watts power where as the quad-core chips will be using 25 Watts compared to the LIano processors using 35 Watts and 45 Watts for the same respectively. Ultrabooks running on these APUs would have a battery life of 12 hours, depending on other hardwares. The embedded graphics in the APUs can be used in CrossFire for a performance gain in graphics.

The five launched APUs are for notebooks and their desktop counterpart will be made available later this year.
