  • Vicarious Inc. a software company that specialises in creating artificial intelligence software (AI) has announced that they have developed new algorithms that can crack CAPTCHA (aka Completely Automated Public Turing Test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) with 90% efficiency. Vicarious Inc. said that their algorithms are capable of cracking all the modern CAPTCHAs, including reCAPTCHA and other mechanisms from Google, Yahoo, Paypal etc., proving that CAPTCHAs are no longer the most effective mechanisms used to distinguish between humans and computer scripts.

    reCAPTCHA-Broken

Computer Science engineers would consider a CAPTCHA scheme as broken if any computer algorithm can break it with a precision of about 1%. However, Vicarious AI software breaks CAPTCHA with 90% efficiency using machine learning and neuroscience. Famous artificial intelligence systems like IBM's Watson and Deep Neural Networks rely on brute force techniques that use massive computing power coupled with big data sets. However, the algorithm developed by Vicarious achieve the same level of effectiveness & efficiency using much lesser data sets and mimicking human brain.

The company says that cracking the CAPTCHA is the first public demonstration of the capabilities of company's Recursive Cortical Network (RCN) technology. The technology is getting ready to be used in robotics, medical graphics analysis, image & video search et al. Facebook co-founder & board member of Vicarious, Dustin Moskovitz said, "We should be careful not to underestimate the significance of Vicarious cross this milestone".

We'd like to know what our CEans think about this advancement?

I wonder what motivated Vicarious. Was it just a challenge to be solved? Or were they actively helping spammers dilute content everywhere?

This is a concern on two fronts.
    1. We'll probably see more spam and worthless content on sites that depend on it.
    2. It's already hard enough for even an authentic human like me to visually decipher, so I wonder what more difficult hurtle they'll hurl at us in response.
Are you sure? This action cannot be undone.
