Alcatel Launches Idol 4 & Idol 4S Android Marshmallow Smartphones With Boom Key

Alcatel has launched the successor of its much successful Idol 3 smartphone with the Idol 4 family of smartphones which consists of Idol 4 and Idol 4S. Both of these smartphones come with a special dedicated hardware button called the Boom Key that can do different functions depending upon which app you use. In the standby mode, the Boom Key can be pressed to launch the camera app and a long press to open the burst mode in camera app. While viewing photos in the gallery, the Boom Key can be used to generate a collage or a slideshow that can be instantly shared with anyone. The Boom Key can also be used generate special effects while watching videos. It can be programmed to replay the previous footage or change the playback speed. When you are on the home screen, the Boom Key can be used to generate a 3D effect for the launcher and generate a live weather update on the home screen.

The Idol 4 sports a 5.2-inch IPS panel display with full HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) resolution. Underneath we find a Snapdragon 617 (MSM8952) chipset that houses a 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex A53 octa-core CPU, an Adreno 405 GPU and 3GB of RAM running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). The internal memory of the Idol 4 stands at 16GB out of which 10GB is user accessible. You can use microSD cards of up to 512GB to expand that storage. In terms of photography, the Idol 4 sports a 13MP rear camera with dual-tone LED flash and on the front we find an 8MP camera with flash with real time face beautification. The Idol 4 is powered by a 2610mAh battery that can suffice for a day’s usage. The Idol 4 measures 147 x 72.5 x 7.1 mm and weighs 135 grams.

As the name makes it obvious the Idol 4S is the more expensive, better equipped model. The Idol 4S sports a larger 5.5inch AMOLED panel display with Quad-HD (1440 x 2560 pixels) resolution. Underneath the hood we find a better Snapdragon 652 SoC that houses a 1.8 GHz octa-core setup (4x ARM Cortex A72, 4x ARM Cortex A53), Adreno 510 GPU and 3GB of RAM entrusted with the task of running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). The internal memory of the Idol 4S is twice as large as the Idol 4 and as before you can use microSD cards to expand that storage. The camera on the rear gets upgraded with 16 MP but the front one is the same as before. The Idol 4S is powered by a 3000mAh battery that comes equipped with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge technology. One of the highlights of the Idol 4S is its packaging box that can serve as a VR headset.

Both the smartphones will debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from tomorrow in Gold, Dark Gray, Rose Gold and Metal Silver colour variants. Availability and pricing information is still awaited.
