Airtel Follows Reliance, Blocks Certain Video Sites And Torrent Services

Adding insult to injury for free internet users, another major Indian ISP Airtel has reportedly joined the Reliance bandwagon of blocking several video sites and torrent services in lurk of a court order, which seeks to prevent illegal download of the major box office releases lined up for the summer holiday season. Several Airtel users have reported blocking of popular sites like DailyMotion, Vimeo and torrent services like The Pirate Bay, BitSnoop, KickAssTorrents and other BitTorrent sites.

Reliance Communications initiated this recent fight against piracy in early May with support from the Department of Telecom, and now several reports suggest Reliance Entertainment to have obtained a ‘John Doe’ order to prevent access to unauthorized copies of their forthcoming Bollywood releases. Subscribers of Airtel trying to open these blocked sites get the following message: Access to this site has been blocked as per Court Orders. However, not all service providers have blocked access to these sites yet, but then mention of a court order might soon force them to do the same.
