Airtel 4G Live In Kolkata. Tariff Plans Start At "Breakfree" Rs. 999

On April 4, we were taken aback by the news that Airtel is going to be the first telecom company in India to launch 4G services. Our earlier reports had suggested that Mukesh Ambani led Reliance would become the 4G LTE pioneer in India, but Mittal moved in quicker. That said, Airtel 4G LTE service is now live in Kolkata and we have information about the tariff plans and other important stuff we want you to know. Being the first one in the market, Airtel's charging Rs. 999 for 6 Gb of data under the 'Breakfree' plan. 'Breakfree Max' plan fetches you 9 Gb of data for Rs. 1399 and the top-notch 'Breakfree Ultra' plan offers 18 Gb of data downloads for Rs. 1999.

Our readers from Kolkata may update us on how's the speed and overall experience of using Airtel 4G. Here's the price chart :-

breakfree Rs. 999 6 128
breakfree max Rs. 1399 9 128
breakfree ultra Rs. 1999 18 128

Don't Jump With Joy Yet!

If you think the pricing is just within your budget then please let us remind you that your regular 3G phones won't work with 4G LTE. You need special hardware and that means you'll have to shell out more money. 4G multi-mode dongle is priced at Rs. 7999 (really?) and indoor CPE (Wi-Fi) costs Rs. 7750. We'd rather be happy with our 3G connections until the prices fall.

New Era In Indian Telecom Industry

The launch of Airtel 4G LTE services in India at the hands of Union Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal definitely marks the beginning of a new era in Indian Telecom Industry. While most of India still struggles with disappointing levels of wired broadband penetration; wireless connectivity may solve the problem of fast Internet connectivty for everyone. Mind well - faster communications will open newer channels of business and we already expect talented engineers to think of innovative startup ideas to utilize faster connectivity options which were not available earlier. As a country with a very large number of Internet-connected youngsters, the data consumption rates in India are going to skyrocket and Airtel's just done the right thing.

We expect Airtel's local competitors like Tata Docomo, Reliance, Idea and Aircel to jump into the 4G soon so that the prices come down and the overall 4G coverage area grows pan India.
