Accelerometer in mobile phones to detect earthquake

Researchers are now planning to use the accelerometers in your mobile phones to warn you about upcoming earthquakes. The master plan is to form a smartphone seismic network of connected phones so that the accelerometers in your smartphones will be able to detect deadly vibrations and feed the data to the network. Current generation of accelerometers are able to detect quakes of magnitude 5.0 and above. With the global spread of smartphones, researchers believe that they'll be able to warn people at least a few seconds in advance. The key will be to make sure that we don't feed the network with false signals. What's your take?
