Have you tried testing Ubuntu ? It's GUI is pretty simple, I guess.
Anyways, Let's cover everything !
(CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO VIEW IN IT'S ORIGINAL SIZE
OR RIGHT-CLICK ON IMAGE & OPEN IN NEW TAB)
- Ubuntu is Linux/Unix based Operating System.
- Ubuntu by default comes with desktop environment named as "Unity".
- You can switch to other desktop environments like "Gnome" or "KDE" or "LXDE" as per your taste. (Don't bother understanding this at this moment)
- When you start Ubuntu, on left-side panel what you see is known as "Unity Application Launcher panel". It looks something like :

This is similar to desktop shortcuts in Windows.
- The top most button in Unity Launcher Panel is called "Unity Home" which looks like:

This is similar to "start menu" button in Windows.
- When you click on "Unity Home" the "Unity Lens" pops which looks like :
In bottom of Lens, you'll see many different tabs like Recents,Movies,Files,Sound,Amazon, etc.
Click on second option as given in figure :

By clicking on it, you can access all Installed Applications & Recent Applications. (All newly installed apps can be accessed from this bar)
-
Installing Softwares : You might've noticed that, even though your internet connection is healthy you're unable to download apps from Ubuntu center, right ?
Before installing applications, you have to update your Ubuntu Repository (what the hell is Repositories ? Ignore it or Google it - your call).
For that, Open Terminal & type :
sudo apt-get update
Be sure that internet is working. This will update the repository file to latest.
Now you can install applications from Ubuntu Software center, looks something like:

& clicking on it will open something like
Search the Applications & hit on "Install" & App will be installed.
Can't Play Songs or Videos ? Codecs Missing ? :
In Ubuntu Software Center, search for "Ubuntu-restricted-extras" & hit on download.
Now your Ubuntu is set up for ride 😉
I assume you understood now that how ubuntu works.

STILL FIND UBUNTU MESSY ?
WELL, I HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE : LINUX MINT 14 NADIA
Yeah, to the people moving from Windows to Linux, this is perfect choice. Why ?
1) It is community driven Operating System which is an derivative of Ubuntu.
2) It uses very simple "Windows-like" user Interface but very neat & fast.
3) It has Ubuntu Repositories which means "Endless Applications"
I am using Linux Mint & Ubuntu both, so check some screenshots of my Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon GUI :
Welcome to Linux, Most people can't survive in our beautiful world & I don't know why.
