A new site by the name Bump.com has come up with the facility to allow the vehicle drivers to socialize on the internet. This site allows the on road drivers to send e-mails, text and voice messages and thus, connect with each other instantly. They are facilitated to these services just by the use of their license plates.

This site also gives an added advantage to the drivers by giving them the provision to access discounts at the local shops where they might be driving then. Mitch Thrower, Base founder (San Diego, California) and CEO of Bump.com as quoted by ABC news said, "It's kind of like a Groupon and a Foursquare, meets AAA and LoJack -- all of which you can't turn off." The program backing up the company’s venture automatically scans and recognizes the license plate numbers with the help of the pictures taken by the security cameras on the road i.e. the traffic lights’ square. After scanning and recognizing the number plates, the program finds out the e-mail accounts, cell phone numbers and the present location and thus, help the drivers communicate with each other.

The company Bump.com has been rigorously working on the technology and also making way to bring out this networking site in complete form by stealthily assigning mail ID’s and voicemail boxes to all the license plates across the USA. The company officially launched this website at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin. Joining Bump.com is very easy. One has to just register on the website to receive an invite to claim your license plate. Once this is done, you just have to visit the website and verify your ownership of the car and create your profile. The company captures images of all the license plates and provides them a unique identity. Whether a driver wants to be a part of the community is solely his/her will. The others on the road will be able to send text and voice messages even to inactive members (license plate owners). However, the driver will receive it only if he registers himself as the owner of that particular license plate.

Thrower said, "Your license plate is basically a public document, a public record, and it ties back to a communication need. Everyone's thought, at some point, 'Hey, I'd like to talk to this person. I'd like to send this person a message'.” One good thing about the site is that it will help in tracking any particular car, whenever necessary like taxi companies to track their cars while they are on rent. You’ll also be warned if your cars are towed and will also receive a direct mail from the towing company to take your car back. This feature might however, help criminals in stalking car drivers. The company, however, states that it will on the contrary help the police to track down the criminals at the times of need.
