The Yunnan Observatories (YNAO) has recently been equipped with a 70 cm robotic telescope that was jointly developed by China and Thailand. Yesterday, the telescope was officially inaugurated in the Yunnan observatory, situated in Southwest China's Yunnan Province in Lijiang City. Professor Qian Shengbang from the Binary Population Synthesis Group at YNAO, confirmed that the telescope hasn't been made open for public viewing as yet , but stated that the initial data recording process for time-scale imaging had already initiated.

The Yunnan Observatory was established in 1930 as the 'Phoenix Mountain Observatory' of Kunming. Later, it was undertaken by the Institution of the Academia Sinica or the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and at present it is regarded as one of the premier Astrophysical and Astronomical research institutes in China. Qian added that the new telescope was a collaborative project between China and Thailand, which was completed last December. He further explained that this telescope would help in long term monitoring of the night sky and will be operated primarily to look for Black holes and Brown dwarfs.

Currently, the institute boast of 2.4 mm telescope, a IR vacuum solar observation telescope (Fuxian Observatory), a 40 mm radio telescope and a 1 m telescope which provides accurate data to ten different departments of the institution. Qian also asserted that Thailand has tied up with Yunnan for more than two decades, and that this new project would definitely help both the countries to scale new heights in scientific research.
