I have always wondered about this. Especially after some friends invested horrendous amounts on some fancy audio cables. I honestly could not find much difference between these Gold plated shielded gewgaws and ordinary wires.

Can audiophiles and causal listeners improve their stereo system by upgrading one of the seemingly simpler components, the speaker wires and connectors? Some companies insist they can. So they offer speaker wire (or cables), sometimes for thousands of dollars that promise better tonality, warmer sound, and richly melodic sound free of grain. But many of these claims are bogus and they create myths surrounding speaker wires.

If you are going to connect a speaker from you PC and the total length is less than a few metre you are fine with any connectors. But not for a setup spanning a few 100 feet.

Gold plated or balanced connectors are the norm in these conditions
