Inventor of Li-ion Battery Fixes 40 Year Old Problem

M. Stanley Whittingham, the inventor of Li-ion battery has helped fix a 40-year old problem with his creation. Not many know that rechargeable Li-ion batteries lose a fifth of their energy capacity even before they're recharged for the first time - whether they're used in laptops, camera or even EVs. Whittingham has now developed a coating that helps save this energy loss caused by impurities. The fix is in the form of a layered nickel-manganese-cobalt material called NMC 811 that allows the batteries to last longer. Whittingham was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
