I've been reading a lot about Wind Turbines these days - the ones that are installed on the rooftop. I wish to know if they are ready to replace the solar panels.

I'd love to know the facts - and practical experience with rooftop wind turbines. Thanks!

We have installed Wind turbine at our home in Ahmedabad after falling for the hype. I can tell you - the wind turbines are not a replacement for the solar panels.

The biggest issue is consistency. Solar panels produce fairly predictable output for 5-6 hours daily in Gujarat. Rooftop wind turbines, on the other hand, need sustained wind speeds to generate meaningful electricity. Most residential areas simply don't have that kind of wind flow throughout the day.

Another problem nobody talks about is turbulence. On rooftops, wind direction keeps changing because nearby buildings disturb airflow. Small turbines keep spinning, but spinning does not mean useful power generation. The actual electricity output is often disappointing compared to the marketing videos.

Then there is noise and vibration. Even the “silent” models create vibration that transfers into the structure. At night, you notice it more.

Maintenance is also higher than solar. Solar panels mostly sit there quietly for 20+ years. Wind turbines have moving parts, bearings, blades, braking systems etc. Dust and heat make things worse in Indian conditions.

Economically, rooftop solar is far ahead right now:

    • Better ROI

    • Lower maintenance

    • Easier installation

    • Proven ecosystem

    • Easier net metering

    • More predictable generation

    Where wind turbines make sense:

    • Farmhouses

    • Coastal areas

    • Open land with strong wind

    • Hybrid solar + wind setups

    • Remote off-grid installations

For normal urban homes, especially inside cities, rooftop wind turbines feel more like an engineering hobby project than a practical replacement for solar panels.

That's a very detailed response, @funny-pal . Really useful. Thank you.
