A company in Norway, Opera Software (Pyra Labs) the makers of Opera (the world's fastest browser) has had guts to take on the big guys out there in browser market - Google, Microsoft & Mozilla. I sometimes wonder what makes these guys achieve this?

Internet has ruled out the limitations set up by Geography. I really wonder, whether a group of college going students can come together and take on the search giants like MS/Google and others. If a groups of guys in Norway can build a better and faster browser than anyone else, why can't a group of students, professionals come together and do something similar? This applies to you, your friends, colleagues in your region - no matter where you are located.

Are there any such efforts going on? Are you involved in it? If no, what's stopping you from doing it?

A related question: In the early days of computers there were groups of teenage enthusiasts that worked on computers outside of academia. Before that there were "phone phreaks" who hacked into telephone systems (such as Steve Jobs). What are groups of teen technologists doing now? Splicing DNA?
Are you sure? This action cannot be undone.
