Raspberry Pi Display : 7", 800x480 Resolution With 10-Finger Touch

Raspberry Foundation, the makers of the popular mini computer The Raspberry Pi 2 Review - Officially Awesome Micro Computer for DIY enthusiasts have announced an official display add-on for the board. You may argue that it's pretty easy to hook Raspberry Pi to any display using the HDMI port. You will however agree that it's not the most portable solution when a TV or computer monitor isn't around. Recognising this problem, Raspberry Pi has released an official simple and embeddable display.

The new display allows for newer possibilities and interactivity with the circuit that you will build using Pi. The display is 7" wide diagonally and operates at 800x480 resolution - which should be enough for most of your work. The display offers 10-point touch, which means you can now think of building a lot of innovative stuff with your Pi board.

Though it's a plug and play display; connecting it to the board isn't very straightforward. You won't exactly need the steady hand of a surgeon to make all the connections but have to be careful while making the connections. A white ribbon cable will connect the display to the board via the DSI (Display Serial Interface) port. You will be able to mount the board at the back of the display which adds to the practicality of using the display. The display can derive power independently using MicroUSB or through the GPIO port.

As Engadget notes, Raspberry Pi isn't the only one in the market that offers an official display extension. The DIY computer kit maker Kano has already opened pre-orders for the 10.1", 150 PPI LCD display. It has a case that has room for the keyboard and battery pack, making it a truly portable package.

The Raspberry Pi is being released with a price tag of about $60+taxes. The display offers a choice of six colored frames. We're curious to know how our fellow engineers would want to make use of the new display. Do let us know.
