New Wearable Technology Concept Aims To Save Cyclists’ Lives
Swedish automaker Volvo, protective gravity sports gear manufacturer POC and Ericsson have collaborated to develop a wearable technology concept that aims to prevent accidents between cars and cyclists. According to the some figures, half of the cyclists killed in European countries have collided with a car. The new system being developed by these three companies shall involve a warning system that alerts both the cyclist and the car driver. A smart in-car system and a helmet prototype will be used to build a two way communication system to transmit proximity alerts to both parties.
Location data is a fundamental requirement for the proposed system. Volvo says that location data from its cars is being readily uploaded to the Volvo cloud and bicyclists can use the popular smartphone app Strava to do the same. The cloud data will be calculated in real-time and if there is a chance of a potential collision, alerts will be sent out to the car on its heads-up display. Cyclists will have to invest on additional hardware though. A helmet-mounted light will blink to warn them of a car nearby. The system will be particularly useful in blind spots created by another vehicle or at an inconspicuous crossroad.
Volvo Cars will be demonstrating this technology at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas from 6th of next month. The technology is in its nascent stage and it will take a lot of work to achieve precision. The prediction algorithms have to be pitch perfect otherwise drivers and cyclists will be bombarded with unnecessary alerts distracting them on the road.
