Make Landline Calls From WhatsApp and Skype In India

VoIP aka Voice Over IP calls are all set to become legal in India. The Government of India is planning to offer VoIP services all over India, which means you will soon be able to make calls to landline phones and mobiles directly from your app like Skype and WhatsApp. Skype has been offering 'call-to-landline' service for a long time outside India and WhatsApp is likely to join in in near future. Expect the call rates to come down significantly in near future.

The department of telecom is now planning to work with the leading Internet messaging and communication service providers to work out a solution. If all things go well, people will be able to make calls apps like Skype, Viber, Line Messenger, WeChat and others directly to the landline or mobiles. Note that this call would happen over the Internet and not over the regular telecom network.

As of now, WhatsApp and Skype allow making calls over the Internet free of charge (data charges are still applicable). However, for this service to work; both the caller and the recipient must be connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or data network. Once the VoIP calling is available, the receiver can receive the call directly even when they're offline. Government might work out special pricing plans for the service, though.

We learn that the necessary approvals have already been taken and the groundwork for the VoIP is likely to begin soon. The technology will have its own challenges as the call quality is likely to depend upon the quality of the data-network. However, if you run out of your prepaid balance, you will still be able to make calls over the Internet, provided you have your data pack active.
