Intelligent Traffic Light Control System
Project Abstract / Summary : As the problem of urban traffic congestion spreads, there is a pressing need for the introduction of advanced technology and equipment to improve the state-of-the-art of traffic control. Traffic problems nowadays are increasing because of the growing number of vehicles and the limited resources provided by current infrastructures. We propose a system for controlling the traffic light by video processing. The system will detect vehicles through video sequences instead of using electronic sensors embedded in the pavement, the most common digital traffic system available. A camera will be installed alongside the traffic light. It will capture video sequences and determine the number of cars in each lane. Based on that number, a green light signal is given for the lane with the maximum number of cars for a longer duration, thus improving efficiency. A provision can also be included to allow emergency vehicles like police cars and ambulances to obtain quick passage.
The video sequences are also stored in a cloud and the IoT. The IoT provides information regarding the density in each lane which can be later used to determine other parameters such as least traffic density path, etc.
Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Being an Indian engineer it is our duty to participate in the nation's economy and engineering growth. We felt that since the Prime Minister and the Government are prssing for Make in India and Smart City proposals, we should definitely be a part of it. So we decided to take on a socially relevant topic of controlling traffic congestions which is the largets problem in India
Project Highlights : Since the traffic problem is very crucial everywhere, we are providing a real time solution for it. Also this project could go a long way in reducing travel time and would project India onto the global scenario in terms of innovation as this has not been implemented on a wide scale popularly.
