India's Fastest Electric Car ORCA Designed & Developed By IIT-Bombay Students

It took 8 years of research and a team of 75 students from IIT Bombay to develop India’s fastest Car, which is allegedly faster than any car developed by Porsche, Tesla or Audi. The car is named ORCA and is sponsored by NRB Bearings, Tata Motors, CEAT Tyres and others. It has been built to represent India against hundreds of other student teams in the Formula Student UK competition. ORCA, being an electric car, has amazing acceleration and reaches 0-100kmph in just 3.74 seconds.

The team leader Rishabh Kappasia, a 4th year student of engineering physics, explained how they specially designed the chassis using a steel frame and carbon fibre that reduced the weight and provides great stability. Manthan Mahajan, the person behind the wheel, added that the stability actually increases with the speed of the car. The ORCA generates a continuous 80 KW from its 95 power cells, which along with the 29kg lightweight chassis tops up at 145kmph.

The team will be conducting a test run of the car recheck its performance before its shipped off to the UK for the final competition. The team has been participating in the event over the past five years and is the only team to have received the FS award for design and improvement. ORCA the Killer Whale’s fate in the competition is yet to come; however, I am sure to follow it along through the races and cheer in its victory.
